Vicksburg Chamber Supports Main Street
The Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce supports the Vicksburg Main Street's request to be considered as a participant in the Main Streets in 3D project.
Vicksburg-Warren County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christi Kilroy has written a letter in support of the Vicksburg Main Street's goal to participate in the Main Streets in 3D project.
Main Streets in 3D is a collaboration with Google and Igloo Studios that is designed to empower Main Street programs to use 3D technology in their revitalization efforts. Designated Main Street programs may apply for a year-long program that will provide free training and support and help create a 3D model of the downtown district using Google SketchUp and Google Earth.
The letter is written to Ms. Andrea Dono, National Trust for Historic Preservation and notes than in the 1970s businesses began to migrate from downtown Vicksburg to more suburban locations, leaving many downtown buildings empty.
"Over the past ten years, through the support of the City of Vicksburg and many private investors, the community has seen the revitalization of the downtown area and its historic properties. The area was beautified and many specialty shops and restaurants have opened. Following that trend was a renewed interest in living in the area. Two old department stores have been turned into upscale corporate apartments and shop owners again are choosing to live above their businesses. An area once avoided by residents now attracts them for shopping, dining and entertainment."
The Chamber notes that the Main Streets in 3D project would greatly enhance our ongoing efforts to develop and promote our downtown area.
